Sunrooms and Glass-Heavy Additions: Why the HVAC System Falls Short

Sunrooms, three-season rooms, and similar glass-heavy spaces create a unique load that central air systems were never designed to handle.


Large amounts of glass allow significant solar gain. Even with blinds or low-E coatings, the space can heat up far faster than the rest of the house. The main system responds to the thermostat in the living area, not the sunroom. By the time the central unit runs long enough to pull the temperature down, the rest of the house is overcooled and the sunroom is still uncomfortable.


Running the central system harder does not solve the problem. It increases runtime, raises humidity issues in other rooms, and still leaves the glass space lagging. Adding supply ducts or boosting airflow often creates pressure imbalances and does little to offset the direct radiant heat coming through the glass.


The practical solution is a dedicated system for the space. A ductless mini-split sized specifically for the sunroom’s square footage, orientation, and glass area handles the load independently. It responds to the conditions in that room alone, provides both cooling and heating when needed, and avoids overworking the main system.


In Chattanooga heat, these spaces become unusable without targeted capacity. A properly selected mini-split keeps the room functional through a Chattanooga summer without compromising comfort or efficiency elsewhere in the house.


Correct sizing and placement matter. An oversized unit short-cycles. An undersized one never catches up. A load calculation based on the actual glass area and exposure is the only reliable starting point.
