Why Does One Room in Your House Get So Hot Every Summer?

We recently visited a client here in Chattanooga who’s been dealing with the same headache for the past few summers: their living room turns into a sauna every afternoon while the rest of the house stays comfortable. They assumed their AC unit was too small and needed replacing. Turns out, that wasn’t the problem at all.

Here are some of the most common reasons a single room stays hot even when the rest of the system seems to be running:

  • The unit is undersized — It simply can’t keep up with the home’s cooling load on hot Tennessee afternoons.

  • Duct leaks — Conditioned air escapes before it ever reaches the room, especially when ducts run through unconditioned spaces like attics or crawl spaces.

  • The room itself gains too much heat — Large windows, poor insulation, or direct afternoon sun can overwhelm even a properly sized system.

  • Airflow restrictions — A dirty filter, closed or blocked vents, or crushed ducts can starve a room of cool air.

  • Long duct runs with no balancing — The room at the end of the line gets whatever air is left after everything else takes its share. Without proper dampers or duct design, it’s often not enough.

  • Thermostat placement — If the thermostat is in a cooler part of the house, the system shuts off before the hot room ever gets relief.

In this client’s case, the real clue was in the crawl space. When we checked it, cold air was blowing right into the crawl space. The unit was actually the right size for the home. The problem was that the ducts running through the crawl space had leaks. Cold air was escaping into the crawl space instead of traveling all the way to the living room at the far end of the duct run. By the time any air reached that room, there wasn’t enough left — and what did arrive had warmed up.

Once we sealed the leaks, the living room started getting the cool air it was supposed to get. No new unit needed.

If you’ve got one room that’s always hotter than the rest, don’t automatically assume you need a bigger AC. Sometimes the system is working fine — the cool air is just getting lost along the way. Give Scenic Air Solutions a call. We’ll find out exactly what’s happening and get your whole house comfortable again.
